What are the lines on your palm said to mean?
Palmistry, also called chiromancy, is the practice of reading a person's character and life from the shape of the hand and the pattern of its lines. It appears in many cultures, including India, China and Europe, and the European version is the one most people picture. Knowing the main lines makes it clear how a reading is put together.
The three major lines
Most readings begin with three lines that almost every hand has.
| Line | Where it runs | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Heart line | Across the top of the palm, below the fingers | Emotional life, relationships and how a person loves |
| Head line | Across the middle of the palm | Thinking style, curiosity and decision making |
| Life line | Curving around the base of the thumb | Vitality and the general shape of life, not its length |
A common myth is that the life line shows how long a person will live. Palmists themselves reject that reading. The life line is read as energy and major life phases, not as a countdown.
Other features a reader looks at
- The fate line, running up the centre of the palm, is read as career and the sense of direction. Not every hand has one.
- The mounts, the raised pads at the base of each finger, are each linked to a planet and a set of traits.
- The hand shape itself, classed in some systems as earth, air, fire or water, is read before the lines are even examined.
How a reading is done
A palmist usually reads the dominant hand as the developed self and the other hand as the inherited starting point. The reading combines the shape of the hand, the mounts and the lines into a single description. As with other traditions, it is interpretive, and two readers can emphasise different things.
The honest limit
There is no evidence that the lines of the hand reveal personality or predict events. The lines are formed by how the hand folds and by genetics, and they can change slowly over a lifetime. A palm reading is best understood as a prompt for reflection. The reader describes patterns in general terms, and the person decides what, if anything, fits their life.
Common questions
Do palm lines change over time?
Minor lines can change gradually with age and use. The three major lines are generally stable, though their appearance can shift slightly.
Which hand should be read?
Most European palmists read the dominant hand as the current, developed self and the non-dominant hand as the inherited baseline.
