How does numerology calculate a life-path number?

Numerology is the belief that numbers carry meaning and that reducing a birth date or a name to a single digit reveals something about a person. The best known figure in numerology is the life-path number, calculated from a birth date. The calculation is simple and worth knowing even for a sceptic, because it shows exactly how the system works.

The calculation, step by step

The method reduces every part of the birth date to a single digit, then adds the results and reduces again.

The life-path number in this example is 8.

The master number exception

Numerologists treat 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers and do not reduce them further. If any step produces one of these, it is usually kept as is.

Where the idea comes from

Modern numerology is often traced to the ancient Greek thinker Pythagoras, who studied relationships between numbers. The direct ancestor of today's practice, however, is a early twentieth century movement, especially the work of L. Dow Balliett and later Juno Jordan, who standardised the letter and number charts now in common use.

The honest limit

The meanings attached to each number are traditional conventions, not measured traits. There is no evidence that a birth date determines personality or destiny. The calculation is fixed and repeatable, but the interpretation is a cultural layer placed on top of it. A life-path number is most useful as a prompt for thinking about values and direction, not as a reading of fixed ability.

Common questions

Does the name matter too?
Numerology also derives numbers from the letters of a name, such as the expression number and the soul urge number. These use a chart that assigns each letter a digit.

Is there any science behind it?
No. Numerology is a symbolic system. The calculation is objective, but the meanings are traditional and are not supported by evidence.
